Hurricane Ian, 2022

Ian came ashore near Cayo Costa on 28 September 2022 as a category 4, pushed a storm surge of ten to fifteen feet into Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel, and killed more than 150 people. It is the deadliest hurricane to hit Florida since 1935.
What the radar shows. The link opens on reflectivity from Ruskin, which watched the whole landfall from the north. Zoom out and the structure is the storm’s own anatomy: the eye, the ring of the eyewall, the spiral bands feeding in from the southwest. Zoom in on the bands and you find the small, fast, short-lived cells that make landfalling hurricanes a tornado threat as well as a wind and water one.
Ruskin’s own view degrades as the storm closes in — attenuation, the beam losing energy through that much rain, is part of what you are looking at.
Archive volumes come from NOAA's public NEXRAD archive on AWS, the same source the National Weather Service publishes. Nothing here is a re-render of someone else's picture.
